Navigating Uncertainty
It probably goes without saying that 2020 has been an incredibly turbulent year for most people. The world has been turned upside down and in some parts completely shutdown, creating a vast amount of anxiety as people from all walks of life face an array of uncertainty.
As of the time of writing, here in the UK we have just returned to a full countrywide lockdown, meaning that a fresh wave of fear could well be crashing down upon us over the next month and longer. After all, the initial period of lockdown was only due to last a month and ended up being nearly six.
We will all be dealing with the pandemic in many different ways, but one thing is certainly clear: It has put a strain on can be very hard on our mental wellbeing. We're all experiencing difficult feelings and emotions about the Coronavirus and its subsequent aftermath. This may be about getting sick, the government restrictions, or feeling hopeless about when the pandemic might end. We're mindful that we're in the same storm but not in the same boat. Here are some anchors to steady yourself during this period of uncertainty:
1. Acknowledge your emotions. Bottling up fear, frustration, or grief only amplifies their impact. Give yourself permission to feel, talk about it with trusted friends or family, or journal your thoughts. Remember, vulnerability isn't weakness; it's a superpower in challenging times.
2. Focus on the present. Dwelling on what might be or replaying past frustrations serves no purpose. Mindfulness practices like meditation or simply focusing on your senses can help you stay grounded in the present moment. Take a deep breath, notice the sunlight on your skin, or savor the taste of your coffee. These small anchors can bring calmness amidst the storm.
3. Find your own rhythm. Structure can be an antidote to chaos. Create a daily routine that incorporates activities you enjoy – exercise, reading, hobbies, or connecting with loved ones. Sticking to a schedule offers a sense of control and normalcy in a world that feels anything but.
4. Connect with your community. We're social creatures, and isolation can exacerbate anxieties. Reach out to friends, family, or online communities. Share your concerns, offer support to others, and remember that you're not alone in this journey.
5. Be kind to yourself. This is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be ups and downs, days when everything feels bleak and others when hope flickers brighter. Give yourself the grace to experience the full spectrum of emotions and avoid self-criticism. Take breaks, prioritise self-care, and remember that even the sturdiest ship occasionally needs to anchor in a quiet harbour.
The COVID storm may still rage, but within us lies the resilience to navigate it. By acknowledging our emotions, focusing on the present, finding our rhythm, connecting with others, and practicing self-compassion, we can stay afloat and even find pockets of calm amidst the uncertainty. Remember, even the darkest clouds eventually give way to sunshine. Let's weather this storm together, one wave at a time.
